Cruisin’ on Skateboards and Scooters
Kick, push and coast! Some kids just gotta glide, and we totally get it. Skateboards and scooters are a great way to keep the kiddos active outside and learn some awesome skills along the way, like balance, coordination, flexibility and confidence. So if they’re looking for their first deck, or their first scooter, you’ve come to the right place!
Skateboards, Longboards and Cruisers
When choosing a skateboard, you’ll typically find three different types: skateboards, longboards and cruisers. So, whats’ the difference? We’re glad you asked!
Skateboards are typically 28-34” long and about 7” wide. They’re lightweight and are better suited for shorter rides. They’re perfect for ’round the block rides or at the park, but their lighter weight can cause some stability issues on longer cruises.
Longboards are, well, longer! They can reach up to 45” long with a width of 9”. Because of their design, longboards are great for beginner riders. The higher weight provides more stability, too, making them great for longer rides over most terrains.
Cruisers are the more compact version of a longboard. Because they are shorter but wide, they are great for shorter rides or if they need to carry it with ease when they’re finished rolling.
Choose their ride based on their needs! Little daredevils will likely want a skateboard, while those who just wanna glide would probably prefer a longboard or cruiser.
Scooters
Scooters have a deck, like a skateboard, and a mounted handlebar for steering. Kids would still kick to gain speed and glide, using the handlebars and balance to keep them going. To brake, press down on the fender against the rear wheel.
While searching, you might come across three-wheel scooters and two-wheel scooters. Three-wheel scooters are a great way for them to learn balance, coordination and steering before they start riding on a two-wheel scooter.
Since the only difference between the two is the extra wheel, they’ll have the skills needed to ride once they get the hang of a three-wheel scooter!
